Mathematics and Numeracy

The following page provides information on the coverage of skills taught within mathematics and numeracy for the spring term. These are:

Place Value

Counting to 50

• Recognise that teen numbers are 10 plus some more.
• identify and represent numbers using concrete and pictorial representations
• Compare, estimate and order within 20 (Introduce a numberline)
• Identify 1 more and 1 less using a number track
• Introduce 0 – Find zero within the setting using books and rhymes – the number
0 can represent a value of nothing.
• Different combinations to 10 using ten frames

Addition and Subtraction

• Number bonds to 5, 6 and 10.

• Add single digit numbers with manipulatives and representations
• Subtract single digit numbers with manipulatives then representations
• Match sets of objects to addition pictures.

Time

• Talk about time – yesterday, today and tomorrow
• Sequence time – yesterday, today and tomorrow
• Days of the week, making a class timetable.
• Sequence daily routine using morning, afternoon and night.
• Use the language first, next, then and finally.
• Discuss special occasions and holidays
• Know the 4 seasons and months of the year.

Money (Financial Literacy)

• Know coin values up £1
• Add coins within 20p
• Compare and order coins
• Learn the coin names
• Find different combinations of coins that equal the same amount of money (using
with practical resources)
• Solve problems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money
of the same unit, including giving change (role-play opportunities)
• Pay for an item given amount using the correct amount
• Use objects/money in a role-play scenario using appropriate vocabulary
• Use 1p,2p,5p and 10p to pay.

Mass and Volume • Compare mass using terminology heavier than and lighter than.
• Use a balanced scale
• Find number shapes to balance using Numicon
• Compare the capacity of different containers and explore capacities through play
using terminology: empty/half full/full.
• Estimate and predict prior to measuring
• Identify equipment for measuring
• Deepen understanding by using heavier/ lighter objects e.g. Feather compared to a small, heavy object, e.g. pebble

Pupils are challenged every week to improve their fluency in integral number skills such as multiplication and addition facts. Here is an example of the Reception Challenge. Pupils are encouraged to use the habit 'Get it Right!' to improve their scores and time. Here is an example below:
