Mathematics and Numeracy

The following page provides information on the coverage of skills taught within mathematics and numeracy for the summer term. These are:

Year 1 – Summer Term

Unit

Skills to be Taught

Money (Financial Literacy

  • Know coin values up £2

  • Add coins to 50p

  • Find change from 50p

  • find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money (link with practical resources)

  • solve problems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change (encourage role play opportunities)

Multiplication and Division

  • Count in 2s, 5s and 10s.

  • Make and recognise groups of equal sizes (concrete and pictorial)

  • Add equal groups (repeated addition using concrete methods 5 + 5 + 5 = 15

  • Doubles and halves

  • Share items unequally and discuss why this isn’t fair

  • Adjust given sets to ensure they are equal in quantity

  • Identify ‘Where did it go wrong?’ in unequal groups

Statistics

  • Populate a table that is provided

  • Record and interpret data in a pictogram with each picture having the value of 1.

  • Distribute sets of data according to Carroll and Venn diagram criteria.

Position and Direction

  • Describe whole turns and half turns.

  • Describe left and right, forwards and backwards, above and below.

  • Ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd up to 10th)

Time

  • Tell and write the time to o’clock and half past on analogue and digital clocks.

  • Revise seasons, months and days of the week.

  • Know there are 7 days in a week, 24 hours in a day and 52 weeks in a year (e.g. your birthday takes a whole year to come around so your next birthday is in 52 weeks).

Pupils are challenged every week to improve their fluency in integral number skills such as multiplication and addition facts. Here is an example of the Year 1 Big Maths Challenge. Pupils are encouraged to use the habit 'Get it Right!' to improve their scores and time. Here is an example below:
