Criw Iaith
We are a group of learners who have been selected for Criw Iaith (or Language Crew) because we show a real interest in learning languages. We started out as Criw Cymraeg (Welsh Crew), a group committed to developing the Welsh language across the school, but with it being part of the mission of Curriculum for Wales to incorporate International Languages, we felt that we needed to evolve so that we could embrace and be inclusive of other languages too, especially since, for many of our families, Welsh may be a third or even fourth language!
However, a very big part of what we do is raise the profile of the Welsh language, heritage and culture at Danescourt Primary School and this is why our name remains in the Welsh language. We are, after all, a school in the capital city of Wales, and we are very proud of this.
Our big plans this year have been to:
- Increase the use of the Welsh language outside of the classroom by launching our new Welsh Phrase of the Fortnight. We have also launched the new Tocyn Tân reward system for speaking Welsh;
- Ensure the inclusion and celebration of the Welsh culture and heritage across the school;
- Profile spoken languages in Danescourt Primary School to ensure representation and foster inclusion;
- Plan for the acquisition of international languages.
We have made an action plan, which we update regularly. We have included this below, in case you are interested!
Meetings take place every Tuesday lunchtime.

Phrase of the Fortnight
Our Phrase of the Fortnight initiative is designed to celebrate and strengthen the use of the Welsh language across our school community. Every two weeks, a different class takes the lead by creating an engaging launch video to introduce a new Welsh phrase for everyone to learn and use. We share two versions of each phrase – one for our Foundation Phase learners and one for Key Stage 2 – so that all pupils can take part confidently.
This whole‑school approach helps us build a positive Welsh ethos, encourages everyday use of Cymraeg, and gives our learners a real sense of pride in their language skills. We warmly encourage parents and carers to join in too – try using the phrase at home, on the school run, or out and about. Together, we can help our children grow as confident Welsh speakers and celebrate the language that is such an important part of our identity.
