A very warm welcome to Year Four's classroom page. As a team, we are very excited to share the learning experiences of the pupils, important information and overviews of the next context.

Our new context for learning this term is 'Quest'. Pupils will be considering how curiosity and exploration have impacted history and science around the world. Pupils will develop their ability to ask questions, investigate mountain regions looking at both their culture and history as well as the geography. Throughout the course of the term, our pupils will experience some wonderful interactive and immersive sessions, in particular, meeting and taking part in a Q&A with Tori James (The first lady to climb Mount Everest).                                                                                                                                           

In the following weeks, the pupils will be provided with opportunities to experience:      

• Immersion day filled with carousel of activities about the context- using the habit of mind Wow! to capture their imaginations and curiosity.
• Completing problem-solving activities and thinking together to create shelters.
• Learning about the features of mountains and their geographical make-up.
• Pupils will learn about different cultures, particularly focussing on those that live in the Himalayas and Sherpas who assist climbers from across the world. 
• When learning about people living in the Himalayas, pupils will also look at Buddhism and other religious/ cultural practises, such as the Prayer flags. 
• Pupils will have the opportunity to create their own prayer flags and learn vocabulary in Welsh, English and Sherpa to decorate their flags. 
• We will be investigating what different equipment will be required for a Mountain expedition and learning new vocabulary for these items in both Welsh and English.
• Pupils will experience asking good questions about equipment, expeditions and much more to our school visitor and experienced mountaineer, Tori Williams.
• In science, the classes will undertake experiments to look at material properties. Over the course of 2 different experiments, they will investigate which materials would be most appropriate for mountain clothing, and which would be most insulating for food on a long journey. 
• Pupils will apply their maths skills when engaging in orienteering lessons and practising how to read maps and use compass directions. 
• Maths skills will be applied when studying the weather data across mountainous regions, as well as other data; teaching the children how to record, present and interpret data and statistics.            
• Pupils will make comparisons using measurement skills between mountains at home in Wales and around the world. 
• Using and applying literacy skills to write explanations of scientific processes. 
• Pupils will collate their knowledge about mountain expeditions and write informative texts about how to survive and prepare for a mountain expedition. 
• Classes will use the habit of mind stick with it when studying the artwork of Kyffin Williams, and emulate his moody style in their own Welsh mountainous landscape paintings. 
• Contributing to deep and meaningful questions based on a variety of stimuli using visible thinking routines and Philosophy for Children (P4C) sessions, e.g. environmental impacts understanding themes of responsibility, interconnectivity and diversity, and how they relate to the world in which we live.
• Looking at local, national and international contexts – focussing on ethical responsibility with regard to tourism impact on mountain paths. 
• Researching using DCF skills to present information linked to science and technology
• Undertaking sport related activities to experience some of the physical impact that climbing a mountain has.
