This term, our exciting learning theme is Quest!
We will discover how curiosity and exploration have helped people learn new things about our world. We will ask questions, investigate ideas and develop our skills as young explorers. As part of our quest, we will learn about mountain regions around the world. We will explore their geography, history and culture and find out what life is like for the people who live there. Throughout the term, we will take part in lots of fun and exciting activities. One of the highlights will be meeting Tori James, the first Welsh woman to climb Mount Everest. We will have the chance to ask her questions and learn about her amazing adventure.
In the following weeks, pupils will have opportunities to:
- Take part in an exciting Immersion Day, filled with fun activities linked to our Quest topic. Using the Habit of Mind Wow!, we will spark curiosity and encourage children to explore new ideas.
- Work together to solve problems and design and build simple shelters.
- Learn about the key features of mountains and how they are formed.
- Explore the lives and cultures of people who live in mountain regions, especially in the Himalayas.
- Discover how Sherpas help climbers on their mountain journeys.
- Learn about Buddhism and the journey to wisdom and other cultural traditions, including the use of colourful prayer flags.
- Create their own prayer flags and decorate them with words and phrases in Welsh, English and Sherpa.
- Investigate the equipment needed for a mountain expedition and learn the names of important items in both Welsh and English.
- Ask thoughtful questions to our special visitor, Tori James, the first Welsh woman to climb Mount Everest and learn about her amazing experiences.
- Carry out science investigations to explore the properties of different materials.
- Test which materials would be best for mountain clothing and which would help keep food warm on a long journey.
- Use maths skills during orienteering activities by reading maps and following compass directions.
- Collect, record and interpret weather data from mountain regions.
- Compare the heights of mountains in Wales with mountains from around the world using measurement skills.
- Use literacy skills to write explanations about scientific investigations and discoveries and diary entries as an explorer.
- Create information texts explaining how to prepare for and stay safe on a mountain expedition.
- Use the Habit of Mind Stick With It when studying the artwork of Kyffin Williams and creating their own mountain landscape paintings inspired by his style.
- Share ideas and ask big questions during Philosophy for Children (P4C) and visible thinking activities. For example, 'If something exists, can it ever truly be discovered?'
This exciting topic will encourage pupils to be curious, adventurous and resilient as they begin their very own learning quest!
We lok forward to sharing pupils' learning with you in the upcoming Learn With Me (Dysgu Gyda Fi) event in November!
